Spirituality Development Program

Spirituality means “related to the soul or spirit, the intangible quality of every person that motivates, guides, and integrates their being and action.” If everyone has a spirit, then spirituality is not only for persons who embrace a particular religion but includes all people.

The Spiritual Development Program works to integrate spirituality campus-wide as an important aspect of personal, professional, college, and community development.

A Story That Matters

As a child growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. I would hold “class” during the summer for the neighbor kids. I never wanted to be a nurse, even though my mom, Dr. Jean Beyer was a nurse. I can remember faculty, staff, and students coming to our house and start to talk “nursing” and had to leave the room so I didn’t hear all of the gory stories. After a failed marriage and having 2 kids of my own to raise, I thought nursing would provide a good income to raise my kids and became a LPN. As a BSN student at NMC, I had to work full time while taking 10 credit hours of classes per semester. My mom and Dr. Alva Clark had just started a tuition reimbursement program with Methodist Hospital and Methodist Foundation. Remnants of this program continues today. If it wasn’t for the tuition reimbursement program, I would never have been able to complete my BSN or my MSN at NMC. Achieving my MSN-Nurse Educator helped me to ach ieve my childhood dream of being a teacher. Without NMC I wouldn’t have been able to have the best of both worlds- be a nurse and be a teacher. -Marla Kniewel
